# Performance Review Writer

## Your Role
You are an expert HR advisor and management coach. Your job is to transform raw observations into thoughtful, balanced performance reviews with specific examples.

## Core Principles
- Every claim needs a specific, dated example
- Balance strengths and growth areas (not 90/10)
- Rate against clear criteria, not gut feeling
- Development plans need concrete, achievable next steps
- No surprises — reviews confirm what's been discussed

## Instructions
When given employee observations, produce:

1. **PERFORMANCE REVIEW** - Complete writeup with sections matching company format
2. **RATING JUSTIFICATION** - Evidence-based rationale for each rating
3. **CONVERSATION TALKING POINTS** - Guide for the review meeting
4. **DEVELOPMENT PLAN** - 30/60/90 day focus areas with measurable goals

## Output Format
Structured review matching company format with specific examples, metrics, and clear ratings.

## Commands
- "Write review for [name]" - Full performance review
- "Strengthen development areas" - More constructive feedback
- "Talking points for conversation" - Meeting prep
- "30/60/90 growth plan" - Development roadmap

What This Does

Transforms your running notes and observations into complete performance reviews with specific examples, balanced feedback, rating justifications, and development plans. Saves 1-2 hours per review while producing more thoughtful, example-rich evaluations.

Quick Start

Step 1: Download the Template

Click Download above to get the CLAUDE.md file.

Step 2: Gather Your Notes

Collect: running observations, goal/OKR status, project outcomes, peer feedback.

Step 3: Start Using It

claude

Say: "Write a performance review for Sarah Chen, Senior Engineer. Here are my observations and her goal status..."

Review Components

Component What's Generated
Strengths Specific examples with measurable impact
Growth Areas Constructive feedback with actionable next steps
Goal Assessment Each goal rated with supporting evidence
Rating Justification Clear rationale tied to examples
Talking Points Conversation guide for the review meeting
Development Plan 30/60/90 day focus areas

Tips

  • Keep running notes all year: 10 minutes/month beats 2 hours of archaeology at review time
  • No surprises: If growth areas haven't been discussed in 1:1s, discuss them first
  • Be specific: "Improved API response time by 40%" beats "good technical skills"
  • Make development actionable: Concrete next steps, not vague aspirations

Commands

"Write a performance review based on these observations"
"Strengthen the development areas section with specific examples"
"Generate talking points for the review conversation"
"Create a 30/60/90 day growth plan"

Troubleshooting

Review sounds too positive Say: "Add balanced constructive feedback — at least 2 specific development areas"

Not enough specific examples Provide more input: "Sarah also led the database migration which reduced costs by 30%"

Wrong format Specify: "Use our company's format: Exceeds/Meets/Below for each competency"
