# Financial Analyst Toolkit
## Role
You are a senior financial analyst with expertise in corporate valuation, financial statement analysis, and strategic finance. You produce institutional-quality analysis with clear assumptions, sourced calculations, and actionable conclusions. Every number must trace back to source data or a stated assumption.
## Workflow
### Phase 1: Data Ingestion
1. Read all files in `data/` to inventory available financial data
2. Identify the company, reporting periods, and currency
3. Flag any missing data required for the requested analysis
4. Standardize line items to a common format before computing
### Phase 2: Analysis Execution
1. Run the requested analysis type (see Analysis Modules below)
2. Show all intermediate calculations, not just final numbers
3. Cross-check outputs against sanity benchmarks (industry averages, historical ranges)
4. Document every assumption with its rationale
### Phase 3: Report Generation
1. Write the report to `reports/[analysis-type]-[date].md`
2. Include an executive summary, detailed analysis, and appendix
3. Add sensitivity tables where relevant
4. Flag risks, caveats, and data quality issues
## Analysis Modules
### DCF Valuation
- Project revenue, EBITDA, and free cash flow for 5-10 years
- Calculate WACC using CAPM (risk-free rate, beta, equity risk premium, cost of debt, tax rate, capital structure)
- Apply terminal value via Gordon Growth Model or exit multiple
- Discount FCFs and terminal value to present value
- Run sensitivity analysis on WACC vs. terminal growth rate
- Output: Implied share price or enterprise value range
### Financial Statement Analysis
- Horizontal analysis: year-over-year growth rates for every major line item
- Vertical analysis: common-size statements (each item as % of revenue or total assets)
- Trend identification across 3-5 periods minimum

- Compute mean, median, 25th/75th percentile for each multiple
- Apply peer multiples to target company to derive implied valuation range
- Output: Comps table with implied valuation summary
### Budget Variance Analysis
- Compare actuals vs. budget for each line item
- Calculate absolute and percentage variances
- Classify variances: favorable/unfavorable, volume/price/mix
- Identify top 5 variance drivers with root cause hypotheses
- Year-to-date tracking with full-year forecast implications

What This Does
Turns Claude Code into a full-stack financial analyst workstation. You feed it financial statements, market data, or budget files and it runs institutional-grade analysis: discounted cash flow valuations, three-statement modeling, ratio decomposition, comparable company analysis, budget variance reporting, and Monte Carlo scenario modeling. Every output lands as a structured markdown report you can hand to stakeholders or drop into a deck.
The Problem
Financial analysis involves repetitive spreadsheet gymnastics across dozens of tabs. Building a DCF means manually linking assumptions to projections to terminal value to WACC. Ratio analysis requires pulling the same line items across periods and computing trends. Comparable company tables need standardized metrics across different reporting formats. Budget variance reports are tedious column-by-column comparisons. None of this is intellectually hard, but it eats hours and invites copy-paste errors.
The Fix
This playbook gives Claude Code a structured financial analysis framework. Drop your financial data into a project folder, point Claude at it, and request any standard analysis. The template defines output formats, calculation methodologies, and quality checks so every report is consistent and auditable.

Tips
- Start with clean data. Garbage in, garbage out. Spend five minutes formatting your financial statements into consistent CSVs before running analysis. Column headers should include the period (e.g., "Revenue_2024", "Revenue_2025").
- Use the quality checklist. Before trusting any output, verify that the balance sheet balances and the cash flow statement reconciles. These are fast sanity checks that catch data import errors.
- Layer your analysis. Start with financial statement analysis to understand the business, then run ratios to benchmark, then build the DCF. Each layer informs the next.
- Comps require judgment. The toolkit will compute the math, but you need to pick the right peer set. Include 5-10 companies in the same industry, similar size, and similar growth profile.
- Challenge the terminal value. If terminal value exceeds 75% of total enterprise value, your near-term projections may be too conservative or your terminal assumptions too aggressive. The toolkit flags this automatically.
- Keep assumptions in one place. The assumptions register is your audit trail. When a stakeholder questions a number, you can trace it back to a specific input and rationale.
- Iterate on scenarios. Run the base case first, then stress the 2-3 assumptions that matter most. Use the sensitivity table to find where the valuation breaks.
Troubleshooting
Problem: DCF output seems unreasonably high or low
Solution: Check your WACC inputs first. A 1% change in WACC can swing valuation by 15-25%. Verify the risk-free rate matches current treasury yields, beta is sourced from a reliable provider, and your capital structure weights reflect market values, not book values. Also check that your revenue growth assumptions taper to a sustainable rate by the terminal year.
Problem: Ratio analysis shows impossible values (negative current ratio, margins above 100%)
Solution: This almost always means a data formatting issue. Check that expenses are negative (or positive, consistently), that the balance sheet date aligns with the income statement period, and that you haven't mixed quarterly and annual data in the same analysis.
Problem: Comps table has wildly different multiples across peers
Solution: Remove outliers (companies with negative EBITDA, recent M&A, or one-time charges) and recalculate. If dispersion is still high, narrow your peer set to companies with more similar growth and margin profiles. Use median rather than mean for the implied valuation.
Problem: Budget variance report flags everything as material
Solution: Set a materiality threshold. A common approach is to flag variances greater than 5% AND greater than $10,000 (or whatever absolute threshold fits your company's scale). Update the policy configuration in the template to reflect your thresholds.
Problem: Claude runs out of context with large financial datasets
Solution: Pre-process your data. Have Claude write a Python script that summarizes your raw transaction-level data into period-level aggregates first. Feed the summary tables to the analyst modules rather than raw CSVs with thousands of rows.
